Curator: This is Jacopo Tintoretto's "Madonna and Child," held here at the Harvard Art Museums. Editor: Immediately striking is the sketch-like quality, a study in tenebrism. Curator: Indeed, we see here the artist’s process revealed through the blue paper support and visible grid lines—a raw glimpse into the artist’s workshop. Editor: The composition feels so dynamic, not at all static like many depictions of this subject. Curator: Tintoretto would have worked with assistants, apprentices who would have prepared materials, and perhaps even contributed to the underpainting. Editor: And yet, despite the visible underdrawing, there’s a clear emotional connection depicted. Curator: This preparatory sketch offers insight into workshop production and labor required to produce an image. Editor: Yes, and thinking about the interplay between light and shadow, it’s a compelling visual study.
