Yolande Delasser made this Money Bank, a watercolour painting, sometime between 1855 and 1995. It's a study of a simple object rendered with careful attention to detail. I'm wondering what it was like for Delasser, sitting in front of this little coin bank, trying to capture its essence. Did she feel a connection to this object? Did she want to capture the feeling of saving and financial security? I think the painting is about careful observation and an act of preservation; she’s saving an image of the money bank. The brown colour she’s using is earthy, with the way the texture is built up dot by dot. It reminds me of pointillism. This meticulous approach invites us to slow down and appreciate the details of the mundane. It feels so intimate, like a conversation between the artist and her subject. Delasser is in conversation with other artists, just like how we're all in conversation with each other. Each stroke, each dot, contributes to a bigger story, an ongoing dialogue, and a shared love for the act of seeing.
