The painting definitely romanticizes the struggle, but focusing on the materiality brings up the social realities surrounding its creation. Curator: Precisely! Also, observe Aivazovsky’s brushwork. He uses a very dynamic impasto technique to depict the aggressive waves and contrasting thin, translucent glazes to capture the vast sky.
