Pierre Puvis de Chavannes created this ethereal sketch of the Pièce d’eau des Suisses at Versailles using graphite and wash on paper. The sepia tone of the paper dictates the colour scheme, creating a subdued, almost dreamlike impression. The light and dark washes define the forms and give a sense of depth. The composition of the artwork is divided into horizontal layers. From foreground to background, we see a loose arrangement of figures, a set of low buildings or structures, a body of water punctuated by conical shapes that may be mounds of earth, then the distant architecture of Versailles itself. This layering creates a sense of receding space, yet the sketch remains flat, denying a fully realized perspective. Through the subdued palette and simplified forms, the sketch invites reflection on memory, history and the passage of time. It suggests how art challenges fixed meanings, prompting us to re-evaluate how we perceive space and representation.
