Curatorial notes
This is an etching made in 1774 by Noach van der (II) Meer, depicting the interior of the New Amsterdam Theatre on Leidseplein. The image gives us a fascinating insight into the cultural life of Amsterdam during the late 18th century. The theatre, with its elaborate decorations and tiered seating, was a space for social gathering and public spectacle. Note how the boxes are occupied by formally dressed people. The theatre itself was an institution, which played a significant role in shaping public opinion and cultural values. In this image, we see how the theatre's design reinforces social hierarchies, with the upper classes occupying the best seats. By studying archival documents such as playbills, financial records, and personal letters, we can gain a deeper understanding of the theatre's role in Amsterdam's society. Artworks like this can tell us a lot about the social conditions of the time, but only if we bring to bear the methods of social history.
