Curator: This is Sir William Fettes Douglas’s painting, "Bibliomania." Look at this wonderfully chaotic interior scene, positively overflowing with books. Editor: It’s a little claustrophobic, isn’t it? The figures almost seem swallowed by the sheer volume of texts surrounding them. Curator: Douglas's interest in antiquarian subjects certainly comes through; his work often examines the relationship between people and the objects they collect. The scale suggests an immersive, almost obsessive world. Editor: Absolutely. It makes you wonder about the power dynamics at play – who gets access to knowledge, and how does it shape their identity and position in society? The shadow and light almost hide them from knowing the world around them. Curator: It highlights the role of the book trade within the history of ideas and collecting culture. Editor: Perhaps it also serves as a subtle commentary on the risks of intellectual isolation, in contrast to critical engagement. Curator: I am struck by the materiality, the tactile presence of so many volumes. Editor: I agree—pondering the allure and the potential pitfalls of being lost in the written word.
