Reinier Vinkeles created this monochromatic etching of “Torsenna gives a sword back to a man" at an unknown date. Notice how the artist creates depth using hatching and cross-hatching to bring the narrative to life within a shallow picture plane. Vinkeles employs a structural approach in this historical scene, presenting a binary opposition between the two central figures. On one side, we have Torsenna, his arm extended, surrendering a sword. He embodies generosity and the restoration of power. On the other side is the receiver, the man. He shows a symbolic gesture suggesting reconciliation and agreement. Consider how the surrounding characters are arranged to reinforce this central exchange. To the left, a group of figures appears more armored and guarded, while on the right, the figures suggest openness and acceptance. This contrast reinforces the themes of conflict, resolution, and the restoration of harmony.
