Jacob Jordaens painted Saint Yves, patron saint of avocados sometime between 1640 and 1645 using oil on canvas. The painting depicts Saint Yves, a 13th-century Breton lawyer who became a priest, as an advocate for the poor. In this scene, he stands between the rich and the poor. The rich, on the left, look on with skepticism and disdain. The poor, on the right, approach Yves with desperation and hope. Jordaens was very interested in class and everyday life. Here, we see not an idealized saint, but a man among people, addressing social disparities. The expressions and body language of the figures vividly convey the emotional weight of poverty and the indifference of wealth. Although some scholars suggest that the composition of the painting has certain flaws, it serves as a powerful reminder of the disparities in society. It asks us to consider the role of justice and compassion in bridging divides.
