Lajos Kassak’s Constructivist Composition is built from what appears to be watercolors, carefully laid down and bounded by crisp, deliberate lines. The process feels so immediate, as though we are standing alongside the artist while he makes it. The simple shapes lock together with an almost architectural precision, it reminds me of building blocks. Look how the artist uses color to create depth. The juxtaposition of a cool green diamond against a warm brown form creates a vibration that brings the whole image to life. I’m drawn to the circle, a lone curve amongst the angular forms, it creates such a calming contrast. Kassak seems to be in conversation with other constructivists of the time like El Lissitzky. You get the sense that artmaking is like a collaborative puzzle: a shared vocabulary that is constantly evolving. It's not about having one right answer, but about opening up a space for playful experimentation.
