Dimensions overall (diameter): 7.08 cm (2 13/16 in.) gross weight: 80.25 gr (0.177 lb.)

This bronze medal of uncertain date was crafted by Master IO.F.F., an artist active during the Italian Renaissance. The medal presents a scene steeped in classical mythology and Bacchic revelry. It reflects the Renaissance fascination with antiquity, yet we must also consider the context of its creation. Renaissance society was deeply patriarchal, and depictions of male figures often served to reinforce notions of power and dominance. The central figure carries the spoils of the hunt, but these symbols of virility are complicated by the association with Bacchus, a god of wine and ecstasy, traditionally associated with the loosening of inhibitions. Note the figure on the left with his downcast expression. Do you think he is sad about the bull? Or is he experiencing a different sort of emotion? The medal invites us to ponder the complexities of masculinity, power, and pleasure within the framework of Renaissance society.
