Robert Adams made this gelatin silver print, The Interior of the Spit, sometime in the late twentieth century, using light itself to play with what feels like a black and white painting. The tonal range of this image, the way it teeters between shadow and light, really pulls me in. Look at how the trees almost fade into the background, creating this sense of depth that feels both real and dreamlike. The way Adams captures the tangled branches, it reminds me of some drawings by Guston, but with this added layer of realness because, you know, it’s a photo. It's a conversation between documentation and interpretation, where the artist’s eye makes all the difference. Adams is an artist who gets that seeing is a process, and ambiguity can be powerful.
