Curator: Here we have an architectural drawing from 1787, titled "Doorsnede van een baldakijn of kapel," which translates to "Section of a baldachin or chapel." Editor: My initial impression is one of serenity. The muted tones and detailed linework create a very contemplative space. Curator: It’s currently held in the Rijksmuseum, and while the artist is listed as anonymous, it's a wonderful example of Neoclassical architectural design rendered in pencil. Editor: The structure is imbued with symbolism. The pillars representing strength and stability, ascending to a dome, the sacred space of transformation and also with the cherubic figures that look very classic. Curator: Yes, the baldachin, traditionally, carries so much religious, and then political, weight as a canopy of authority, of a place of dominance, but the bareness in the design makes me think about power and class, the institutions for whom this image could have meaning. The design presents the notion of order while also highlighting its restrictions and limitations. Editor: You're right; there is that inherent tension, isn't there? What comes to my mind is its resonance to theatre stages and their use of height to elicit dramatic response. Curator: A good parallel. I feel it also begs some questions about cultural patrimony and to whom it extends and represents; its design echoes motifs of the past. It reminds one that Neoclassicism emerged out of a very specific and conflicted political and social era. Editor: I agree, the artist makes use of these historic motifs of dominance for expression of some purpose that can still engage us. Curator: I am so glad that we discussed this. This exploration made me aware of many questions about the meaning of design and also cultural memory as we observe its presence. Editor: It reminds me to explore the meaning of line and symbolism of images which communicate powerful values to viewers.
