Joan Brull painted this landscape with a figure sometime in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, and it feels like a dream. There’s a softness, an ethereal quality, created by the pastel hues and gentle brushstrokes. You can almost feel Brull feeling his way through the painting. Look closely, and you'll see how the paint is applied in thin, almost translucent layers. The way he builds up the colors, especially in the sky, makes it feel like the light is shifting right before your eyes. Notice how the trees on the right are defined with vertical strokes, drawing the eye upward. The figure, a woman in a flowing gown, seems to be part of the landscape, her arm outstretched as if she’s communing with nature. Brull’s work reminds me a bit of Puvis de Chavannes, another artist who created serene, idealized landscapes. It's like they're both whispering secrets about the beauty and mystery of the world, inviting us to find our own meaning in the ambiguity.
