Fernand Léger made "La femme au miroir" in 1930, and it’s like he's not just painting a woman with a mirror, but also how we see, how we piece things together. The colors are bold—reds, blues, greens—all bumping up against each other, which is what makes it so exciting! Look at that big blue semi-circle, and how it's sliced into these sharp triangles. It’s almost like he’s taking apart a machine and putting it back together, but instead of steel, it’s made of feelings. And the brushwork is so clear, you can see every stroke, every decision. Léger isn’t hiding anything. For me, this kind of reminds me of Picabia, who like Léger, was another artist who was constantly reinventing himself. But where Picabia was all about chaos and absurdity, Léger, to me, feels more optimistic, like he really believed in the power of art to make sense of the world, even if it’s a little bit crazy.
