Jacques Stella created this drawing, "The Deathbed of Mary," using pen and wash. The scene is dominated by two realms: below, the earthly sorrow surrounding Mary's passing; above, a celestial host awaits her soul. The olive branch held aloft by a figure near Mary embodies peace and, in a Christian context, symbolizes divine grace and reconciliation. We see this motif echoed across centuries, from ancient Roman allegories of peace to Renaissance depictions of the Annunciation. Yet, its persistent presence speaks to humanity's enduring longing for harmony. Just as in ancient times, when olive branches were presented as offerings to the gods, here it serves as a symbolic offering, easing the transition from earthly life to heavenly glory. The collective memory of loss and hope is palpable, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. This cyclical progression shows how these symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings.
