Gazmend Freitag made "Au Wihlering," an oil on canvas, sometime in 2024. What strikes me first is the way the paint sort of breathes on the canvas, it’s not overworked, there’s a freshness to it, like the feeling of walking into a cool forest. Looking closer, the brushwork is really interesting. It’s not about blending or smoothing, but about laying down these confident strokes of color. You can almost feel the artist making quick decisions, responding to the scene. The way he renders the water is so simple but effective. It’s just a few strokes of blues and whites, but it captures the movement and the light reflecting off the surface. It reminds me of Fairfield Porter, who was also great at capturing the everyday beauty of nature. Ultimately, this painting is a conversation about seeing, feeling, and responding, it's about art as a process, not just a product.
