Curatorial notes

Rembrandt van Rijn made this arresting portrait of an old man with oil on canvas. The magic of this painting lies in the layering of the paint, creating a palpable sense of texture and form. Look at the fur collar, for instance. It’s not just brown, it's a symphony of browns, achieved through countless strokes that give the fur its characteristic loft and depth. It also has a sense of material presence. You can almost feel the warmth and weight of the fur against your skin, an effect of Rembrandt’s skillful manipulation of the viscous medium. And then there’s the face, a study in the effects of time on human flesh. Rembrandt doesn’t shy away from wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin. Instead, he celebrates them, using his brush to map the topography of age. Rembrandt, rooted in the traditions of craft, elevated painting to an art form that captured the essence of human experience. And in doing so, he challenges us to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper meanings embedded within the artwork.
