This photograph of the Sint-Antonius Abtkerk in Mook was made by an anonymous photographer using early photographic methods. The sepia tone gives the whole scene a kind of dreamlike timelessness, don’t you think? The image is quite simple, but the textures! Look at the rough brickwork of the walls against the smoother rendered surface of the church itself. The play of light on the building emphasizes these contrasts, really bringing out the material qualities. Notice the shadows cast by the windows, and how they repeat and invert the shapes of the windows themselves. The composition leads your eye around and around the building, hinting at hidden corners and stories we can't quite see. It reminds me a little of Atget's architectural studies, a quiet record of the past, made with a deep appreciation for process and the poetry of ordinary places. There’s a beauty in its simplicity, in the way it invites us to slow down and really look.
