This is a left shoulder defense, made of steel sometime in the mid-16th century by the Milanese armorer Niccolò Silva. While we may think of armor as purely functional, a piece like this one shows that it was also an opportunity for incredible artistry. The surface is etched with elaborate designs, demonstrating Silva's skill not only in shaping the metal but also in decorating it. The pauldon's form was achieved through careful hammering and shaping of the steel, a physically demanding process that required years of training. The decoration required even further expertise, using acid to bite away at the metal and create intricate patterns in relief. Looking closely, you can see the amount of labor, skill, and care put into this object. This elevates it beyond mere protection to a statement of wealth, status, and refined taste. Armorers like Silva were not just craftsmen but artists, blurring the lines between the practical and the beautiful.
