Editor: So this is an untitled drawing by György Kepes. It's graphite on paper and I am just immediately drawn to how intricate it is, almost like looking at a microscopic world blown up to a larger scale. What are your initial thoughts? Curator: You know, I feel like I've stumbled into some fantastical, cellular wonderland! Kepes was obsessed with the way technology allows us to see things invisible to the naked eye. It's like he’s saying, "Look! There's a whole universe hiding inside a dewdrop!" The meticulous repetition suggests growth patterns, but that stark central void is haunting, right? Editor: Absolutely, it's a void that’s mesmerizing and also a bit unsettling. Are we meant to see that absence as a negative thing? Curator: Maybe? Or maybe it's just space, pregnant with possibility. Kepes was deeply influenced by scientific imagery, but he wasn't trying to create a straightforward illustration. This drawing feels more like an invitation, an opening, to contemplate the strange beauty and fundamental mysteries of nature. Almost like an alien landscape you find yourself lost in. Don't you think? Editor: I do! It also makes me wonder if it reflects how small we are in relation to all of existence! Thanks for sharing all this. It’s made me appreciate it even more. Curator: My pleasure! These pieces show that sometimes looking closely, even into what seems empty, can reveal universes within ourselves and everywhere around us.
