This newspaper clipping, whose maker is now unknown, captures a network of resistance. Just imagine the act of pasting together fragments of images and words, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I can't help but imagine what it might have been like to create this, what they might have been thinking when they made it. The layout of the images is so striking, a collage of small black and white photos and text arranged on a larger page. They tell a story, or rather, fragments of stories pieced together. Each image, with its stark contrast and grainy texture, speaks of urgency and secrecy. It makes me think about other artists who have used collage and montage to convey complex narratives, like Hannah Höch. There's a similar sense of fragmentation and reassembly, a way of piecing together disparate elements to create a new whole. It reminds us that artists are always in conversation, building on each other's ideas. Painting, like collage, embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
