Vasiliy Ryabchenko painted “Balbesin upbringing,” and the wonky perspective, almost Fauvist color, and unfinished quality make it seem to embrace process. The painting's surface is built up with layers of thin, transparent washes of color, with energetic, almost frantic mark making scratched on top. Look at the figure on the lower right, see how the orange underpainting shines through? The overall effect is a sense of immediacy and raw emotion, like he’s really trying to work something out here. I’m thinking of Picasso, who Ryabchenko quotes, but perhaps also the color and mark-making of someone like Francis Bacon. Both artists, like Ryabchenko, are interested in the human figure and its expressive potential, and they aren’t afraid to push the boundaries of representation. Ultimately, this piece reminds us that art is an ongoing dialogue, a conversation across time and space.
