Alevtyna Kakhidze made this untitled drawing with what looks like a ballpoint pen, creating a world of personal symbolism. You can feel the hand of the artist here, the loops and starts of the lines, the directness of the marks. I imagine her thinking aloud as she makes the drawing. The figure on the island, with the word “Rasiia” written on it, holds up a banner, a letter perhaps, filled with urgent questions in blue. And then a figure parachuting down, offering simple answers: Yes, Yes, Hi. Kakhidze has a way of turning the political into something intimate and diaristic, like other artists such as Nil Yalter, or Corita Kent, who also worked with accessible and immediate means. This drawing reminds us that art is a place where questions can be asked, feelings expressed, and shared, one gesture at a time. It’s an ongoing conversation.
