Katsukawa Shun'ei created this woodblock print of the actor Segawa Kikunojo III as Maizuru. The roundels on the screen hold chrysanthemum blossoms, symbols of longevity and imperial association in Japanese culture. Consider how these circular forms echo across time. They resonate with ancient sun discs, emblems of divinity and eternal return. Even in Christian iconography, halos evoke a similar concept of otherworldly grace. What do we make of this? The motif of the circle persists, transforming yet remaining tethered to its origins. Here, though, the chrysanthemum is framed. It feels like a commercial logo, as the actor's image was itself a commodity. We see how symbols once rooted in the sacred are subtly co-opted, their emotional power now harnessed for more earthly ends. A potent reminder of art's ability to touch our deepest selves while reflecting our ever-changing world.
