Editor: This is an intaglio of the Callipygian Venus, after antiquity, by the Pichler family. It’s quite small, almost delicate. What can you tell me about its significance? Curator: This image, celebrating a specific aspect of the female form, begs the question: Who is it really for? Was this for personal adornment, a private viewing? How does the male gaze play into the creation and circulation of such an image, even today? Editor: That's a perspective I hadn't considered. Curator: Thinking about the agency of the artist and the viewers, and the original context, shifts the conversation beyond mere aesthetics. Editor: Definitely gives me a lot to think about. Thanks!
