This print by Walraad Nieuwhoff allegorizes the Belgian Revolution of 1830, presenting a symbolic tableau of the conflict. At the center, the Dutch Lion stands defiantly beside a cannon. Consider the lion, a symbol of courage and strength, used throughout history to evoke national pride and power. The lion is here an echo of ancient heraldry, yet it evokes subconscious connections to mythical beasts and primal forces. This symbol has resurfaced in various forms across different eras – from the Lion Gate of Mycenae to the medieval bestiaries – each time imbued with new layers of meaning. Here, the artist uses it to stir deep-seated emotions. The image is a non-linear, cyclical progression of the symbol, adapted and repurposed to reflect a specific moment in time.
