Owen Jones created "Renaissance No. 1", a collection of ornamental designs, during the 19th century, a time of significant cultural and social change in Europe. Jones, an influential figure in the design world, sought to reform Victorian tastes, advocating for principles rooted in historical styles. The designs here reflect the Renaissance era, characterized by a revival of classical art and learning. Yet it was also a time of colonialism, where Europe's wealth was gained by the exploitation of other cultures. These aren't mere repetitions of Renaissance motifs, though. Jones adapted them through the lens of the 19th century’s burgeoning interest in the decorative arts, which were newly available to the masses. This plate reflects the complex interplay between tradition, innovation, and societal hierarchies, prompting us to consider whose stories are told and whose are left out. It reminds us that what we consider beautiful and valuable is deeply intertwined with our society’s values and power structures.
