Arnoud Schaepkens created this print, 'Boy with Greyhound,' using etching, a printmaking technique with a rich history. In this process, a metal plate is coated with a waxy, acid-resistant substance. The artist then scratches an image into this coating, exposing the metal beneath. When the plate is dipped in acid, the exposed lines are eaten away, creating grooves. Ink is applied to these grooves, and the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Here, the etched lines define the forms, creating subtle tonal variations and textures, from the boy’s patterned clothing to the fine fur of the dog. The etching process requires careful control and a deep understanding of the materials, merging technical skill with artistic vision. This detailed process reflects a tradition deeply rooted in the intersection of craft and fine art, demonstrating that the means of production are just as crucial as the final image.
