This bronze medal, created by Joseph-Pierre Braemt, presents a symmetrical composition, divided between a figural scene and a decorative wreath. The tactile quality of the bronze and the bas-relief imagery invites close inspection, a dance between the symbolic and the material. On one side, a female figure, possibly an allegorical representation of the institute, is seated regally, holding a staff, while gesturing towards what appears to be a burning vase. A wreath encircles the other side, empty of any further explicit symbolism. The contrast between the detailed figural scene and the spare, circular wreath raises semiotic questions. Does the wreath signify unity, completion, or perhaps the cyclical nature of knowledge itself? The figure embodies a set of ideas about learning and progress that are framed by classical and Enlightenment traditions. The medal’s form, a self-contained disk, implies an intrinsic completeness but this very shape also raises questions about what it includes and what it excludes, prompting the viewer to consider the medal not only as an aesthetic object but also as a carrier of cultural values.
