This photograph, of Gezicht op de boerderij en het Kasteel van Mheer, was probably made to document the site. The sepia tone gives the image a feeling of looking into the past. It’s as if time has softened the edges and muted the colors. The texture here is all about light and shadow. The surface of the tower is smooth, but there are dark horizontal lines that create depth. Look closely at the wall of the castle on the right, the light fades the further it gets away from the tower. There’s a ghostly quality to how the light drapes across the whole scene. The way the artist captured light reminds me of Corot, who was interested in capturing the feeling of the place, rather than a mirror image. There's something really beautiful about the way art helps us see the world. It's like a never-ending conversation.
