This is "Spanish Guerrilla Fighter with Dagger in a Landscape," a print made by Nicolas Toussaint Charlet in the first half of the 19th century. Charlet, who had served in the Napoleonic army, dedicated much of his artistic output to the depiction of soldiers. This particular image resonates with the complicated politics of the time. It simultaneously romanticizes and gives a glimpse into the visceral aspects of conflict. Notice how the guerrilla fighter is presented: His figure looms large and is heavily shaded, he is a man marked by the land and by war. In contrast, the uniformed soldier in the background appears small, almost insignificant. Charlet here invites us to consider the human cost of war. It is not only a tale of grand strategy or heroic feats, but of the individuals whose lives are forever altered by violence. It humanizes the experience of those who are often reduced to mere statistics.
