This photograph, "Pagina 14 van fotoboek van de Algemeene Vereeniging van Rubberplanters ter Oostkust van Sumatra (A.V.R.O.S.)", was taken by J.W. Meyster. Looking at this image, the whole thing kind of hums with a sepia tone. I can almost feel the sun beating down, baking the film. I'm imagining Meyster, lugging his camera equipment through the Sumatran heat. What was he thinking as he framed this shot of the houses dwarfed by the towering palms? Was it about documenting the rubber plantation, or was there something else that caught his eye? It's fascinating how a simple photograph can evoke such a strong sense of place and time. It reminds me that photography, like painting, is about capturing a fleeting moment and turning it into something lasting. It's a conversation across time, these images of ours.
