David Young Cameron pulled this print, “The Ferry,” using black ink on paper. At first, it seems pretty straightforward, but the more I look, the more I see how Cameron teases out depth. I’m drawn to the foreground, how the etched lines create this sort of shimmering effect. It’s like the water's both still and moving, reflecting light and shadow all at once. There’s a real sense of atmosphere, a quiet, hazy day by the water, and the more you look, the more detail emerges. It reminds me a bit of Whistler’s etchings, that same economy of line, but with a touch more grit. Like he’s not just showing you a pretty scene, he’s showing you the real, lived-in world. It's all about finding the extraordinary in the everyday, the beauty in the mundane. And that’s something I can definitely get behind.
