Editor: So, this is "Guitar and Jug" by Georges Braque, hanging here at the Tate Modern. The color palette feels really muted, almost monochromatic. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It's like stepping into Braque's mind, isn’t it? I see a conversation between the mundane and the melodic. The guitar, the jug—they're everyday objects, but Braque elevates them, almost like old friends sharing secrets in a dimly lit room. Do you feel that intimacy? Editor: I do, now that you mention it. It's almost as if they are whispering. Curator: Exactly. And that's the magic, isn't it? We're not just looking at a still life, but eavesdropping on a silent harmony. I suppose it’s that invitation that sticks with me most.

Braque used traditional artists’ props such as guitars, jugs and glasses to experiment with composition. The familiar objects in Guitar and Jug are presented in sombre colours of brown and grey. He uses fluid lines to create the objects, their softness set against a rigorous structure. The items may also have symbolic meaning. The guitar may suggest artistic harmony. The apples, branch and glass could celebrate the abundance of nature. Braque’s interest in depicting a variety of materials and textures is also clear. In this work he includes wood, glass, fabric, organic elements and wallpaper. Gallery label, August 2020
