Mary Newbold Sargent made this watercolor of the Gulf of Corinth as part of a sketchbook she kept during her travels. She chose to work in a monochrome palette, using just black pigment mixed with varying amounts of water, to depict the mountains, sea, and sky. Watercolor is a medium that encourages fluidity and spontaneity, perfect for capturing fleeting atmospheric conditions. The lack of color directs our attention to the tonal variations and the way light interacts with the scene. Sargent skillfully manipulates the wash to create depth and texture, from the rugged peaks to the reflective water. The softness of the watercolor lends itself well to the subject, creating an ethereal quality, and an emotional connection between the artist and the landscape. Through her art, we appreciate how materials, process, and place converge to create a lasting image of a singular moment in time.
