Muirhead Bone created this watercolor painting, “Motala, Sweden,” using paper, pigments and water. Bone’s technique here is especially interesting; he coaxes the paint to do his bidding. He controls the flow of the medium to create form and structure by adding layers, washes and varying pressure to create the textures of the trees, the architecture, and the boat at the fore. He was a master of observation and of his craft. Yet he knew the value and virtue of an understated approach. This watercolor painting speaks to the traditions of fine art and illustration. It invites us to consider the importance of skill and intention in understanding artistic expression, regardless of medium.
