Greg Hildebrandt made this painting of Perseus and Andromeda, but the date is unknown. It's a real showstopper, full of action and light. I love how he uses a limited palette, sticking mostly to golds, browns, and blues, and how the process of applying the paint is evident in the final image. Look at the dragon's scales, each one carefully rendered to catch the light. The texture of the dragon gives it weight and a sense of danger. And see how the water is just a flurry of white, capturing the energy of the moment. It reminds me of some of Frank Frazetta's paintings with the same dynamic storytelling, that almost comic book style, full of larger-than-life characters and dramatic lighting. Ultimately, this painting leaves you with a sense of wonder and excitement. And isn't that what art is all about? It's not about answers but about the thrill of the chase.
