Curator: So, here we have Laurent Cars’ “Venetian Festivals,” an engraving. The scene is quite idyllic, but I wonder, what stories are left untold? Editor: It seems like a happy gathering, but everyone is so stiff and formal. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The festivals, perhaps, mask a more complex social reality. Consider the power dynamics, the gaze. Who is represented, and who is not? Who benefits from these displays of leisure, and whose labor makes them possible? Editor: I didn’t think of it that way. It’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of the scene, I guess. Curator: Exactly! Art often invites us to look beneath the surface, to question the narratives we’re presented with. Editor: I'll definitely look at art differently now. Thanks for broadening my perspective!
