Gijsbertus Johannes van Overbeek drew "Dog with two puppies" using dark ink on paper. I can just see the artist bent over the paper, coaxing these pups into being with thin, scratchy lines. The mother dog is huge, at least compared to the puppies, and looming. One puppy is up on its feet, ready to go. The other is still prone, kind of splatted out on the carpet! What’s going through the artist’s head as he makes this? Is it a memory of his own pets? It's interesting to think about how the physical act of drawing—the pressure of the pen, the angle of the hand—contributes to the overall feeling of the image. In drawing there is a real focus on the character of the line itself, much like a painter considers the materiality of the paint. It's all about embracing the directness of the medium. The immediacy of the creative act. One artist looking at another; one medium informing another.
