Sue Coe created this print, “Picnic,” to reveal her deep-seated concerns about animal rights and social justice. Influenced by her childhood experiences near a slaughterhouse, Coe presents a disturbing juxtaposition between a seemingly idyllic picnic scene and the harsh realities of animal slaughter. The figures at the picnic table appear indifferent, perhaps even complicit, in the suffering depicted below. Coe critiques the meat industry and humanity’s often-callous treatment of animals. The black and white medium underscores the starkness of the subject matter. The artist uses a style reminiscent of German Expressionism to amplify the emotional impact. Her work confronts viewers with uncomfortable truths, challenging them to consider the ethical implications of their actions. Coe once said, "My work is about bearing witness." Coe's work serves as a mirror reflecting the uncomfortable aspects of our relationship with the natural world. It's a powerful statement about the ethics of consumption, and compels us to reflect on our place within the larger ecosystem.
