Josua van Solingen created this vignette of a library interior sometime in the late 17th or early 18th century, using etching techniques. At this time, literacy and access to books were largely confined to the upper classes, and libraries were spaces of privilege and scholarly pursuit. What do we make of the presentation of knowledge as being held and handled by a select few? Here we see two figures engaged in what appears to be an exchange of knowledge, set against a backdrop of towering bookshelves. The grand, ornate frame around the scene perhaps emphasizes the exclusivity and preciousness associated with learning and intellectual life during this period. Consider how our own access to information today contrasts with the scene depicted here, and what it means for society. How might such a scene resonate differently depending on one's own position within systems of power and knowledge?
