Editor: This is a follis of Maxentius, from Ostia. The coin is quite worn but there is still a palpable sense of power. What stories do you see embedded in its imagery? Curator: Coins are fascinating! They’re not just money, they’re little packages of imperial propaganda. The portrait on one side evokes Maxentius's authority. Look at the other side. Do you see the figures? Editor: Yes, I do. They look like soldiers. Curator: They are. These figures, these symbols, were meant to evoke feelings of strength, security, and continuity. A Roman ideal meant to assure and control. What do you make of this? Editor: I hadn’t considered how much these small objects were designed to broadcast a message! Curator: Exactly! Everyday objects imbued with potent, lasting meaning. It really puts history into perspective.
