Rein Dool made this drawing, Toni met sigaar zittend, in 1977. The thing that gets me about drawings is how they can be so direct, like a thought caught on paper. Dool's got this way of using line that's both precise and kind of wobbly, you know? Look at the way he renders the face, it's all these tiny, careful marks, but then the blocky chair is just filled in with solid black. It's like he’s playing with different ways of seeing. There's a real sense of weight to the figure, even though it's just a drawing. And that smoke, rising up...it's so delicate, almost like a question mark. It reminds me a little of David Hockney's drawings, that same mix of cool observation and quiet intimacy. Art's just one big conversation, right? Each artist riffing on what came before, trying to figure things out in their own way.
