Paul Klee made "Merkzeichen für später" with simple materials, like ink on paper. The immediacy of his mark making really speaks to me; it's like watching him think. Look at the black ink. It’s opaque, thick in some places, thin in others, especially where you see the paper showing through. The marks feel intuitive, almost playful. I love the little cluster of dots – they have a sense of rhythm. Then there’s the flower, or maybe a star, blobby and imperfect. It brings a sense of lightness to the whole thing. The shapes hover between symbols and pure abstraction, like language before words were pinned down. Klee’s work reminds me of Miro, that same sense of childlike wonder. It’s like he’s inviting us to participate in his private language, a language that's always shifting, never settling. It’s a reminder that art is about the questions, not the answers.
