Editor: So, this pencil drawing, "Personen op het terras bij een tuin"—"People on a Terrace by a Garden"—by Dionys van Nijmegen, dates sometime between 1715 and 1798. It's incredibly faint, almost ghostly, depicting figures in what seems to be a garden. What catches your eye when you look at it? Curator: Well, the delicacy for starters. It's a whisper of a scene, isn't it? Van Nijmegen has this lovely way of suggesting forms with the barest minimum of lines. Look at how he creates depth. There's this stage-like setting that feels theatrical and slightly melancholy. Does it strike you that way? Editor: Melancholy? Hmm, I see more of a serene, quiet moment. But I do agree about the stage-like quality. It’s as if we're peeking in on a private moment. Who do you think these people are? Curator: Ah, that's the mystery, isn't it? Could be a family, or actors resting between scenes. Given the period, I imagine it was a window into a leisured, if privileged, life. Maybe a little bored? Notice the way the artist lets the surrounding vegetation engulf the characters and gives us space to fantasize about a world which will never be… or always already was. It could be any time and everyone has lived something similar. It's this vague humanness. Editor: I didn't think about boredom! The understated nature really makes the imagination work to fill in those details. Curator: Precisely! Van Nijmegen invites us to co-create the narrative. These suggestive sketches were exercises in pure artistic freedom, to find beauty anywhere at any time. It makes one ponder if it's as good as done? Editor: I've definitely learned to look a bit closer and imagine beyond the lines. Thanks! Curator: And I see potential to find even greater ones. Wonderful.
