Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph of Katherine Dudley with, well, a camera, of course! Look at the way the light caresses her legs and hands; it's all about the process of capturing a moment. The surface of the photograph is smooth, almost velvety, which gives it an intimate feel. The tones are soft and muted, but still create strong contrasts, drawing your eye to the delicate details. See how the fabric drapes and folds, catching the light in different ways? And then there are those adorable shoes with their little bows. Think about how this image echoes the nudes of someone like Edward Weston, but with a softer, more sensual approach. Ultimately, Stieglitz invites us to linger in the quiet spaces between seeing and feeling, and to accept that art is an ongoing conversation.
