Paul Klee made this artwork called "Monuments at G" with paint, layering thin horizontal lines of pink, green, grey and yellow. It’s a world built stroke by stroke, a process of accumulation. Up close, the paint has a dry, almost chalky texture. You can see these little tiny marks like a seismograph of feeling, or like the details on a map. The way Klee lets some of the colors peek through, especially in those monument shapes. It gives everything a kind of shimmer, as if the past is always present. It’s not just what's there, but what’s underneath. Look at the base of the piece, the little symbols, they are just the cutest! You know, this makes me think of Agnes Martin. Both of them had this way of making the most basic marks, and making it the most profound. Klee makes you wonder if art isn't about answers, but about staying in the question.
