Alfred Freddy Krupa made "The ultimate breakfast of the ultimate predator" from found objects, sometime after he was born in 1971. It's kind of punk, and sort of funny, but then really, it is not so funny. The animal skull and rack of antlers are spot lit on this sea-foam-y, styrofoamy table, set for a meal with a plastic knife and fork. And the colors are pretty, but everything seems artificial, the skull cast in shadow, and the cheap plastic cutlery too. I feel some kind of sense of dread with this setup, this still life, a kind of modern vanitas - we think we are in charge, and the ultimate predators, but it’s us who will likely end up as ghosts at the table. I'm thinking about Hannah Höch and her Dada photomontages, a sort of sardonic take on society, and how we picture ourselves within it.
