This is a study sheet with female figures, made by Gerard ter Borch around the mid-17th century in the Netherlands. During this period, the Dutch Golden Age, artistic depictions of women often reflected societal ideals and gender roles. Here, we see two partially draped female figures rendered in ink. The intimate and informal nature of the sketch gives us a glimpse into the artist's process and perhaps even his personal relationships. Were these images studies for a larger painting, or were they a reflection of Ter Borch’s understanding of the female form? How do these women reflect the period's cultural attitudes toward femininity and beauty? The ambiguity invites us to consider the complex interplay between the artist's intent, cultural expectations, and the representation of women in art.
