This offset of a chalk drawing by Isaac Israels is just a whisper of a landscape on paper. Look at the marks, how they scumble across the surface. I can imagine Israels in the studio, chalk in hand, lightly, intuitively trying to get a scene down. What was he thinking? Maybe he wanted to capture an impression of the moment. Maybe the chalk broke and that’s why the marks are so short and stubby. It's all about touch, pressure, a kind of sensory investigation. The texture of the paper, the feel of the chalk, the way light falls. Each decision builds on the last, informed by feeling, memory, and a healthy dose of experimentation. It reminds me of Twombly’s drawings. So what if it's just a sketch? It’s part of an ongoing conversation. It’s like they’re egging each other on, saying, "Hey, try this. See what happens if you just let go."
